Fábrica Viúva Lamego, founded in 1849, located in the down town city area, where the main factory shop is still located (largo do Intendente – Lisboa), was active in the manufacture of both red clayware housewares and white faience tableware and wall tiles.

On entering this century the production of red clayware was finishing, and in it's place the production of tiles became the strength of the factory. In 1930's the factory moved it's base from one District to another, but remaining in the City of Lisbon. In 1992 the Factory was moved again to a purpose designed and built premises to Abrunheira-Sintra, outskirts of Lisbon.

It was also during the 30's that a very close collaboration with free lance artists took place, which made new artistic expressions possible on wall tiles. Today, this type of close working association with renowned artists is still an important part of the tile production activity of our company. In fact this association has many ways dictated the prodution layouts, to adapt as much as possible to the diversity and flexibility of methods required by the contemporary artists.

Viúva Lamego has nowadays a labour force of approximately 135 employees, of which 55 are painters and decorators. The actual production is characterized by a vast number of hand painted decorations in both wall tiles and houseware articles, wether reproductions of XVI, XVII and XVIII centuries, or special designs from free lance artists submitted by customers.

From the total production the great majority is related to hand painted wall tiles and acessories, using either the dust pressing technique, or the wet process (slightly irregular shaped hand made tiles).
