| Beijing, China - 1921. Zao Wou-Ki belongs to the traditional Tsao family. An ancient family, who ascends to the Song dynasty. When he was 6, he already painted at will. In 1953 he enters in Hanghzou Fine Arts School, where he stays for six years. In 1941 he was named assistant of the school, and he presents his first solo exhibition that same year. In 1948, he leaves to Paris. There he met Sam Francis, Norman Blum and Vieira da Silva. Since 1951 till 1959 he travels around the world. By 1959 he bought a house in Paris where he builds his studio, an isolated place to meditate, where he can paint without being observed, exchanging travelling for isolating. The ceramic tile mural for the Oriente station is called "l'Atlantic". |
